¡ö About the University

Peking University has a excellent reputation within the academic field and is China's highest-ranked institution of higher learning. Since its founding in 1898 the University has been a leading force for the development in China, and its alumni have played a predominate role in the economic, political and cultural life of the nation. Today Peking University enrolls more than 13,000 undergraduate and 9,000 graduate students who are supported by a faculty of 4,500.
The University is located in the northwestern corner of Beijing which once was the private garden of the imperial family, the 700 acre college campus is one of the most beautiful academic settings in the world.
Each year over two thousand overseas students from more than sixty countries attend classes at Peking University. While some are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs, most people come to the University for Chinese language development program. Peking University's Chinese Language Center offers twenty levels of instruction from beginning through advanced.
The curriculum follows standards articulated by the National Committee on the Teaching of Chinese as a Second Language and offers certification at various levels through the HSK: China's equivalent of the TOEFL. The Center employs a language faculty of 42 full-time professionals teachers engaged in teaching and research. All are nationally certified teachers for teaching the Chinese Language and several are leading scholars in the field of language.

¡ö Course Description

Students will be evaluated by the faculty of the Chinese Language Center and placed in an appropriate class according to their abilities in four separate skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will attend 20 hours/week and classes are held from 8:00 to 12:00 Monday through Friday. Each class is equivalent to one semester course at a U.S. college or university. Upon completing the program, the student will receive an official transcript (Certificate) from the University. Additional information is provided upon registration.

¡ö Host Families

Our Study Chinese Program is unique. It offers homestays for accommodation, and this is the only type of housing in our program. Staying with a local family is definitely the best way to practice language and have close contact with the Chinese culture. As a fully integrated family member you will eat, watch TV, shop, and experience daily life with your "mom, dad and brother or sister." Meanwhile, you won't have to give up your privacy as you will have your own space -- a private bedroom and bathroom.

Each of our host families has been interviewed by our staff and a security check is completed before a family is accepted. The hosts are excited about hosting foreign guests, because in the past, due to government restriction, they weren't able to open their home to foreigners. In addition to our on-site staff, the host families will also assist you and provide all the necessary information and first-hand help needed during your stay.
Each family has all the convenient living facilities you would find in a Western home, including TV, DVD player, computer with DSL, refrigerator, microwave, washing machine, air-conditioning and western toilets with 24-hour hot water. Your room will be fully furnished with a bed, desk, wardrobe (or closet) and air-conditioning. Most families are located in nice communities, where a swimming pool, tennis courts and a supermarket are available.

Families near the campus have convenient public transportation between the university and their home, which usually takes no more than 20 minutes by bus or train.
